Introduction to the Care of Historic Cemeteries

 

NCPTT and the Oak Hill Cemetery Preservation Society will offer a one-day hands-on workshop for the basic care and maintenance for historic cemeteries. This class is open to the public on September 23rd in Janesville, WI. The workshop cost is $35 per participant.

This workshop will begin with registration and check-in at 8:30. Followed by lectures on the basic steps of documenting historic cemeteries including survey forms and tips for successful photography. Topics will also include an introduction to establishing preservation priorities in an historic cemetery. The final lecture of the morning will focus on cleaning of stone monuments and overall cemetery care. There will be ample time for questions and answers. All morning activities will take place at the chapel at Oak Hill Cemetery at 1725 N. Washington St. Janesville, WI 53548.

 

After an hour off for lunch the workshop will continue at the Oak Hill Cemetery and begin with hands-on cleaning of stone markers. This will be followed by training to reset stone grave markers. The day will conclude with instruction on the repair of headstones.

 

Jason Church is a Materials Conservator in the Materials Conservation Program at the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (National Park Service) on the campus of Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches. Jason divides his time between conducting in-house research, organizing various training events, and teaching hands-on conservation workshops. He earned his M.F.A. in Historic Preservation from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Who Should Attend

This is an introductory course beneficial for cultural resources staff, trustees, genealogists, cemetery caretakers, grounds keepers, students in historic preservation, public history, and allied fields, and others interested in caring for a cemetery, whether you are doing the work yourself or working with a group to see that a site is maintained and preserved. No prior training or experience is required.
