Petrographic Description:

Specimen: 2014-031

This specimen is a very fine grained marble with some larger rounded to sub-rounded crystal, imparting an overall porphyroblastic texture. Crystal orientation is random in both groundmass and larger porphyroblasts. Maximum grain size is near 2.75 mm, minimum is cryptocrystalline in scale. The modal size of matrix grains is ~.1 mm and the modal size of porphyroblasts is 1 mm. Several of the porphyroblasts present curving twin lamellae. Overall twin lamellae are rare in porphyroblasts. Accessory minerals are essentially absent except for very small opaques in the groundmass in a size range near .01 mm. There is no appreciable weathering in this sample or visible macrostructure such as foliation. Foliation/bedding is clearly visible in hand samples.
