Mary, it looks like the keepers of CoOL have heard your outcry. Apparently the CoOL and its Cons-DistList will be moving to the AIC: http://cool-palimpsest.stanford.edu/byform/mailing-lists/cdl/2009/0684.html Here's a link to the AIC's statement: http://www.conservation-us.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=page.viewpage&pageid=898

The AIC seems like a very fitting home for this web community. Hopefully they and the moderators of CoOL will take this opportunity to upgrade the technology behind the site and email listserv so that it becomes less labor-intensive and more user-friendly.

Thanks for this excellent post, Mary. I agree that the regular weekly international conversation that Walter and CoOL faciliated have been very helpful for many people in the field. Other unmoderated and scattered online sources could never take it's place (in fact, CoOl served as a great place to consolidate refereces to some of those other sources).

Thoughtful and moving post, Mary. Thank You! Many people are as committed to a solution as Walter was to CoOL version 1. I hope we can do half the job until we can get him back on it!
